Am I Being "Punked"?

You’ve gotta be kidding me. I bare my soul about my dilemma, and asked my dear blog friends to help me make a wise decision – and what do I get?
A tie. Not just right now, but all day long. Last night when I posted the survey I thought to myself “there will be a consensus, my friends will help me.
A tie? Right now its 23 to 23. Earlier to day it was 10 to 10, 15 to 15, 20 to 20. Last night it was 2 to 2. I appreciate the consistency…
So, apparently I was right to be wary. It is a hard decision. I alone must make this decision, and as soon as my EC tells me what to do, I will do just that!
But I do appreciate the comments, and I want to let any cynical lawyer-types to know that I wasn’t just doing this to increase blog hits for my non-existent advertisers.  Some of the comments have been valuable. I was a tad bit dismayed that it degenerated into a discussion of which picture I look most like.
If you haven’t voted, please do.
If you voted, but didn’t leave a comment, then you are a slacker.  I’ll keep it up until Friday to give you a chance to shape up.
Thanks! (?)
-MMM- (And that’s all you’re getting – for now)

  1. I voted “too dim to have an opinion.” I honestly don’t mind one way or the other. If you don’t reveal who you are …. I won’t really know you except your thoughts written in posts.

If you do reveal who you are: I still won’t know you besides your thoughts written in posts.

  2. Thanks for leaving the voting open since I missed yesterday. I would like to think that my vote is the deciding one. Lofty aspiration, I know.

Obviously my blog is public and people know who I am, but it’s my decision to share what I want to share. Some people have found out that I am slightly more irreverent than I appear to be in real life, but they have become good friends because they feel they know me better and I am more approachable. I’m all for making friends. I don’t blog every day, but I’m sure I could come up with enough stories on other topics (like 80 ft. Jesus statues) that I wouldn’t have to resort to bashing or making fun people I know or people who might be readers. I’m sure you are the same. And it’s likely that stories that happen in your ward are stories that happen in a lot of wards, so you might be able to generalize the topic and still make it funny without being damaging. I also think you have “identified” yourself as an upstanding genuinely worthy person, and the idea that people might not read what you have to say because they know who you are is like devaluing an uplifting quote once you found out it was Mother Teresa who said it. Just silly. In fact you may get more readers who know you and are anxious to hear your wisdom. I would like to think that your MMM persona is not much different than your real life persona. People who know me well know that I am just as irreverent in real life (in a good and slightly spunky way) as I am in my blog posts, so I have nothing to hide. But if you feel like you are posting anonymously because you want to be someone you’re not, well boy, you have bigger issues there…. and I don’t think this is the case.

If you were wondering if I have better things to do with my time than write novels in your comment section, yes, I do. Duh, the US Open is finaly resuming after a major rain delay.

  3. I say let the people know! And , you have already been bishop so everybody already has an opinion about you so whats the harm. I think your posts are awesome and I look forward to them. Your humor is great and there is almost always a religious thought to go with it and it keeps a smile on my face and makes me reflect religious matters in my life.

  4. Your blogs are both pithy and wise (mostly) and I appreciate your dilemma. I long to know who you are (I could ask Janette R. but that would compromise her and would show a shallow side of me that I wish to keep hidden. Also, I was of the opinion that you reside in the Mesa/Chandler/Gilbert area of AZ. Now, I wonder…).
I do not believe you are President Uchtdorf because I can’t believe that such a humble man would write a blog about why no one else will ever be as ‘cool’ as he is. Also, the George Clooney identity is flawed because, while he is seen with various supermodels, I can’t believe you’d go so far as to cover your identity in such an unseemly way when you have such a wonderful EC.
I voted ‘yes’ but fairness demands that I leave it up to you and your EC. Although, if you DO reveal yourself, you might want to forego the photo. Many of us have a picture in our minds of how you look and would hate to be disappointed. (Can’t seem to get rid of the George Clooney thing…)

  5. Anonymity for anyone other than commenters who leave snarky comments is rare these days. It shows your refreshing lack of narcissism. I wish I had that…

    Keep the mask on, Zorro.

  6. I voted ‘No.’ Who cares who you are? And can you actually get into the nitty gritty of comments if everyone knows who you are talking about because they have inferred it base on who you are. I like more blatant honesty on meaty topics, than I care who you are?

  7. I prefer some modicum of anonymity myself and expect you deserve the same. Also, I rather suspect my head is in the sand much of the time and I probably wouldn’t know you even if you did say who you are.

  8. (Anon-M) It looks like we are getting a flurry of comments from a multiplicity of “Anonymouses”. And this about the blogger keeping himself anonymous. I can’t help thinking that at least one of the Anons above is a FOML.

  9. Mr. Anonymous commenter: If you think MMM is “milking” the topic for posts (instead of seeking actual advice) you haven’t read very much of the blog. He is not lacking worthy post topics.
    J

  10. Just think how long you can milk this for posts: a couple now, then one to explain why you chose not to reveal yourself; then in a while you can raise the question again, wondering if conditions have changed … but no … ; and then there will a come a time when somebody almost unmasks you, and you can fight that off for a few posts; and then …

Identifying yourself is an irrevocable step. Are you sure it won’t greatly change your voice here? If your MMM persona is a little sassier, or a little funnier, or a little whatever, than the real you, can you maintain your MMM voice, people who know you in real life as well as on blog will recognize the difference — can you live with that?

If there are stories you must tell that are so identifying that you can’t tell them as MMM, then take off the mask. Otherwise, let it alone for the time being.

Add your 2¢. (Be nice.)
