MMM: It’s Everywhere

Tattoo MMMLast Friday night, my soon-to-be-a-grandmother EC wanted to drop by Michael’s to “look at yarn.” This was a new phrase to me. The first grandbaby has not even been born, and she has taken up crocheting. It has been a while since I have seen her crochet.  It must be genetic. In her defense, I have been spending time perfecting my techniques for feeding ice cream to infants without their parents noticing. I digress.

My EC wanted to look at yarn. Did you know that there are more types and colors of yarn than there are people on the planet? And they are all on display at Michael’s.

Since I really don’t care if a yarn is sport, chunky, or worsted, I feigned interest at first, then wandered off to entertain myself. Before anyone goes cracking wise about Michael’s and “Man Cards,” let me remind you that you can find model rockets and Pinewood Derby stuff there.

My mission? To find the MMM acronym in the store and post a picture of it on Facebook. And if I couldn’t find one, I’d make one. Here are my conquests:

Stickers MMM

MMM wood cutouts

Metal MMM

Planter MMM

Well done. Don’t you agree?  Apparently not.

Since then, there has been a strangely wonderful stream of “MMM”s doing to my Facebook wall. They have even come from readers in other countries, like England, or Texas. Some are “spotted in nature,” some are actually made by very creative people. They are all lots of fun.

Some are made of candy, others food. One of horse manure. Some include adorable children, others observant people with cameras. One includes both Darth Vader and Yoda. And one, only one, show the beauty that is perfectly cooked bacon.

So, without any further ado, here is the assortment, in no particular order. (If I left yo out, I apologize – I didn’t go into this intending to post them here, but felt a movement such as this needs properly documented for posterity.)

Thanks to everyone who has pitched in – it has been a blast!

  1. Our local Subway has been advertising for you (and hot soup) quite a bit over the winter. Everytime I see it I wonder how you worked that out. I should have taken a picture.

  2. Pretty cool. The one that stood out for me, was the MMM written with barbeque sauce at Jim ‘n Nick’s! They have the most amazing pulled pork!

  3. Wonderful! just in case you ever wonder if you have made a difference……you are loved.

  4. Hahaha I love it! My initials used to be MM before I got married when I was little if I was in a craft store or somewhere with letters like that I would have set the M’s up in a row…its funny that you are doing it as a MMM 🙂 I sent you a picture a couple of years ago where someone tagged MMM on the wall of the subway in DC, I might need to dig that picture up and send it your way once again, it would be a good addition to your collection.
I can relate completely to your excitement over the new bebe, we are in the same boat and we only have about 8 more weeks to go until the little princess makes her debut. I’m not a crocheter, I should learn, but my Mother is and she has already made the baby all sorts of beautiful things, a blanket, a cute sweater, hats, booties, gah its so exciting isn’t it!
Fun post, thanks for sharing it…

  5. I’ll be on the lookout! By the way, some of the letter blocks look like W’s! 😉
