The words “fair” and “deserve” don’t really have much use in our mortal existence. Neither is a realistic hope, nor should it be an expectation. It was never part of the offer. So when life throws us a wicked uppercut, we need to remember:
We signed up for this.
It is true that we are hit with challenges we don’t expect. Challenges that from a worldly, short-term view might appear unfair, or undeserved, but that is Man’s view, not God’s.
More difficult still, is when life takes aim at one of our children. Then I feel the words “fair” and “deserve” burning in my throat as I try to push them down, and remember:
Our kids signed up for this, too.
Then you wish that you could intervene. Please let it be me – not them. Let me take those hits. And in that very moment, maybe, just maybe, we are beginning to understand a fraction of the Atonement.

Alan, When we did pinatas we put little bags of treats in them and each kid got one bag. No big kids knocking over little kids to rake in all the treats.
Last week was one of the hardest weeks for me. A lot of things are going on that deserve my attention and my serious thought and on top of that blessings are being asked for that aren’t here yet and yeah, “Its not fair” has been a part of it. Despite tears and stress and feelings of inadequacy, I do always remember that I chose to be here and have these trials. Everything will be ok, because Heavenly Father is in control. So long as I do what I am supposed to I will overcome and be blessed, probably beyond what I imagine. Justice will be given now, or later, because God is a Just God. Its worth the growth and the refinement to go through these hard times. Patience and trust in His timing is essential. We need faith and trust in the fact that Heavenly Father won’t give our blessings away if we are doing the things we should. I just deleted a bunch of stuff, because I don’t need to get on my soapbox. This was an excellent thought provoking post, and is exactly what has been on my mind. Exactly. Because something good will always come out of it, for sure! xoxo
Great message. Have a fabulous Conference weekend!
i feel like a piñata…
good reminder..
I have thought this many times since we signed up for the military. I love this!
Ironically, it is for fairness and not deserving things that we don’t use pinatas for family parties. We’ve always thought it encourages greed and the little ones get knocked around while the bigger kiddos scramble for the candy.
And then there’s the kid who’s standing there blindfolded . . .
Oh dear- that made me laugh out loud! Good one. Sometimes those “beatings” we get in life just make us stronger and are a blessing in disguise. I think having cancer as a teen was a blessing in disguise for me.
That’s a good thought.
My son says, “First you get beat up, then stuff comes out of YOU and they eat your guts. That’s good?” LOL I love his sense of humor.
Ha ha ha ha. Awesome.
