I knew it was going to be a busy morning, with lots of chores to do. So I ran over to the grocery store to start the day right:. To get a dozen donutes – and a gallon of chocolate milk – because chocolate milk has vitamin D and protein. (Gotta keep the family healthy!) When I got to the counter, I didn’t recognize the place. I don’t know what happened during the night, but the normally normal baker went nuts.
Oreo covered donuts,
German chocolate donuts,
Peanut butter donuts,
“Everything” donuts with coconut, nuts, sprinkles etc.
The generic lineup was still there, but this new, eclectic batch had been added to the mix. And right in the middle, shining like a beacon in a dark night, was this: A bacon donut. A bacon beacon.
It was a regular raised donut with maple icing, topped with pieces of bacon. I had to get one, just because I’m a man.
Guess what? It kinda worked. Somehow the bacon with the maple worked in the same way that pancakes and syrup work with a side of bacon. I liked it. My only criticism is that the bacon needed to be rendered down a little more for a better textural contrast. (So I watch “Chopped” – what of it?)
So there you go. Next time you see a bacon donut, know that it has been pre-approved by MMM.
Happy Saturday!
Here
Futher proof of this eternal truth……bacon makes everything better. I could go on about how pork is a Celestial meat but I don’t want to cast my pearls before swine.
Man Vs. food came to Portland OR and found VooDoo Doughnuts http://voodoodoughnut.com/index.php
They have bacon, as well as Captn Crunch and cocopuffs and many others. very interesting combos.
I loooove bacon.
I love donuts.
I love maple frosting.
I’m pretty certain I could go for one of those bad boys. Or two. Or maybe twelve…
Unfortunately, us Brits aren’t terribly up to speed with the whole bacon loving thing in the same way you guys are (and our bacon is definitely not as yummy as yours!), so there’s very little chance of me finding something similar over here.
I’ll just have to live vicariously through you for the time being! 🙂
MMM: now with bacon! This post almost redeemed you from the Pinterest post. 100 points back on your man card. I too enjoy the bacon maple doughnut (it deserves the respect of the full spelling). They remind me of father-and-sons campouts with small foam plates and nowhere clean to sit, so your plate tips and the syrup from your pancake runs over onto the bacon and eggs.
I have found one except to the “bacon makes everything better” rule: fish. I like fish; I like bacon. They do no go together.
They aren’t fish, but there isn’t anything better on planet earth than a grilled bacon-wrapped scallop.
Yes! Don’t knock it till you try it. THE best!
Just curious-
How old is Middle-Aged and what happens when you pass that?
Will you post as More Than Middle-Aged Mormon Man?
I’m 50 now, so I am probably well past middle-age. I have no intention of living past 100. But I’ll keep the moniker – “Geriatric Mormon Man” just sounds too depressing.
Sounds interesting. I don’t do donuts much (not one of my many serious food vices generally), but I will keep them in mind should the occasion arise. Glad you enjoyed it. Or was it them?
Bacon chocolate cookies???? Do let us know how that goes, Lilola.
My YW have been raving about these for weeks. I refuse to even try. REFUSE.
Somewhat disappointed. I always figured you for a more adventurous spirit. Oh well, we’ll saved a boring, plain, glazed for you.
Yikes! Yes crispier bacon. We saw bacon donuts being made on ‘Diners, Drive-ins and Dives’ (it comes on after ‘Chopped’) a few years ago and followed their method of dipping the freshly glazed donut in crispy chopped bacon. They must be eaten ASAP. No chance for congealing.
Makes me want to try the recipe I found for Chocolate Chip and Bacon cookies. Really!
Ooohhhh!! The maple bacon beacon! It is surprisingly delicious! We have a local donut shop here in good old Wyoming called ” Cowboy Donuts.”. I am not joking at all when I say that their maple bacon beacon is ALWAYS the first to be sold out! So to all you nay-Sayers out there…I say don’t knock it til you try it. Mmmmmm……bacon
Oh, they have a maple bacon, too (The first link is to a chocolate bacon donut). So you could still get that fancy maple/bacon combo. Blegh.
Gross. Bacon is the devil. But this did remind me, there was this donut place that my husband loved to visit, they have a bacon donut, too. Only theirs actually looks appetizing, even though bacon is an abomination.
dry. heave.
Now I have to go make a spinach smoothie, just to get the imaginary taste out of my mouth…
(I DO like bacon–just as a stand alone and NEVER mingled with my donuts! ack!)
