One of the advantages of forgoing anonymity, is that now I can delve into stuff from my life that I avoided, for fear of spilling the beans. Today’s post is such an event.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, (BYU in 1985) the school presented a weekly ‘talent’ show. My friends Jeff and Rolland and I decided that we needed to participate. We practiced, we took dates to our performance, and then we left, having had a great time.

The next day, we were a little nervous, and anticipated a potential phone call from the Standard’s Office (After you watch the clip, you will understand.). Instead, we received a call telling us that we had actually won the event, and a free t-shirt. We never heard from Standards, but we were invited back to a “Best of Concerts Impromptu” to be held in the Spring. Phew!

This video is a copy of a copy of a VHS copy from 1985 – the quality is bad. All you really need to know are three things:

1) There were 2,000 people in attendance

2) I am the guy in the middle

3) We did not win this time.

I present to you, a video from my past, entitled “They are Naked, and They Do Dance.”

Oddly enough, we were invited back for one final performance at the Miss BYU Pageant – hosted my none other than Steve Young and Sharlene Wells. I’m sure it was a high point in both of their careers.

Ahh, glory days…

  1. Oh my goodness! I’m actually crying and my sides hurt. Can’t remember last time I laughed so hard. Absolutely brilliant. +1 to Elizabeth Hill’s comment.

  2. YES, yes, yes! Loved this. So glad to know we can all have a good laugh. Again, I was having a down day and you have turned it around for me. Side note: Glad you came out. We moved to Alaska from Gilbert 30 years ago and it was fun to find out you are living there. If we had stayed, the Temple would have been almost right out our back door. Back then it was just a lot of nothingness out there. VERY rural.

  3. It is so awesome that you have this footage!!! This was epic and I remember it like yesterday! Thank you for sharing, you gave me a good laugh and a smile on my face!! Cha cha cha!!

  4. That was priceless…when I was there (way before you)it was all about sideburns and hair over your collar. I got off work late and did not have time to go home and change before I showed up for a mid-term exam. My uniform consisted of a top and pants. I hurried to take the test and the test monitor would not let me take the test in pants. I was wearing a rain coat so I went into the loo and took off my pants, put the raincoat back on and the proctor let me take the test. (no, he did not know what I had done). My husband thinks that is the funniest thing he has ever heard!

    1. Reminds me of a forward my sister sent me a couple of days ago- 10 reasons why it’s easier to go to the temple than BYU… 🙂
#10- They don’t make you go home and shave…etc.

  5. This is kind of naughty for BYU, especially in the 80s. I’m impressed you got away with it.

  6. So you know Ro and I reprised that at a ward party when were in an EQ presidency together. It didn’t end well. People walked out. It was fantastic.

    1. It has been only friend’s YouTube for years – I just stole it. (He’s the one who couldn’t hold onto his cards.)

    2. Angela, did you ever see this at Lethbridge’s New West summer theatre shows? Now I know where they stole it from! Thanks MMM, for a great laugh!
