I don’t know how old I was when I learned that there was actually a game that utilized the dots on dominoes. Up until that time, I thought the sole reason for their existence was to be stood on end in dizzying lines and patterns, and then knocked over. I stand by the idea that this is the real reason for their creation.
Today in Sunday School we talked about Joseph Smith’s First Vision. As I was preparing during the week, I got quite involved in learning about the “dominoes” that needed to be lined up in order for that important event to happen. The dominoes included Joseph’s upbringing, struggles with health, as well as his parents financial hardships and choices – stuff we all deal with. But there were dominoes that were lined up for Joseph and the Restoration that were huge mountains. Society needed to be changed. Populations had to be moved. The world needed to be enlightened to be prepared for that moment, and those events that followed.
The dominoes were lined up from before this earth was created. Joseph was foreordained to be the prophet of the Restoration. The Apostasy had to happen. The Book of Mormon needed to be written. The enlightenment of Western Civilization had to transpire: The Renaissance, and the Reformation had to prepare the minds and hearts of an entire population.
Then a land needed to be established where these people could worship God in a new, and enlightened way – free from the historic control of government and oppressive religion. These were huge dominoes that had to be lined up. But the new land was discovered, and settled, and eventually freed. These dominoes spanned hundreds of years, taking us from the dark ages to a small grove of trees in upstate New York.
God set things up, so that the right boy, could be at the right place, at the right time. And it all fell into place. I am too old, experienced, and jaded to believe in coincidence.
When I see the Divine orchestration that permitted the young Joseph to receive an answer to a simple prayer, I marvel, and I wonder…
What dominoes has God set up for me? Do I recognize them, or do I look at them and see fate or coincidence. While Western Civilization was not altered to accommodate anything I’ve done lately, I can see how decisions and circumstances were lined up to get me to where I am this very moment – and for that, I am grateful. But I would be lying if I said that there were things I had to deal with in my life that I would have rather avoided all together. (As if I have a choice in the matter.)
It seems that so many people are reeling right now from challenges and tragedies that have been thrown into their paths. How do we look at those events, those experiences?
Did God put them there?
Did they just “happen?”
Did we put somehow put them there?
Is there a reason – a design – to what’s happening to us, or is it “just how life goes?”
It seems we are very best at seeing the line of fallen dominoes when we look behind us. Sometimes we have to have a good amount of distance before we can even see the pattern. Sometimes we never see it, and if you are like me, we have a list of questions that we intend to ask God when we meet again.
There are rare occurrence when we realize there is a blessing wrapped deeply inside a catastrophe as we are experiencing it, but not often. Faith, revelation and humility always seem to play a great part in this.
Sometimes we are privy to a glimpse of the way the dominoes are lined up before they are slated to fall. Priesthood and patriarchal blessings, personal revelation and promptings can illuminate what is up ahead – more often vague, but occasionally crystalline. And it can be equally wonderful, or terrifying.
It takes a tremendous amount of perspective and faith to stand in the midst of the storm, and identify it as our personal training ground – as it swirls around us.
I can’t imagine that Joseph Smith was too thrilled with the response the Lord gave him when he was struggling.
Experience. That’s right. That is what we are here for. Sometimes I like to forget that part – because that part often hurts, and causes my gratitude to run cold. When the experience is good, I easily find my grateful voice.
The Lord has His plans for us. While those plans might be exhilarating, they are just as likely to be painful. The dominoes that were lined up to get us where we are now have fallen – and here we are. There are dominoes that surround us now, and those that lie ahead – it is up to us to accept them, and learn from what is in store for us.
What is lined up ahead for me? Maybe that is the wrong question.
What will I learn from what lies ahead? Better.

Do you happen to have six fingers on your left hand?
Ann’s comment is apt…. and we have been repeatedly told
by GOD’S leaders what will happen… of the TWO year
storage, of teaching in our homes, rather than at the wards,.
and of the fact that our life will be worth it, Our Savior is
the way to get through this… we voted for HIM to do what HE
did….
Do you have a reference on that? I can only find reference to 1 year supply.
So much gratitude fills my heart. To Joseph, to you, to the wonderful people who comment and let us have a glimpse of their hearts and trials. Most of all to my Father in Heaven for my path and Jesus Christ for filling in all the holes of my imperfections.
It’s so cool when you can look back and see how things lined up in your life. THis has happened to me this year and it’s amazing to think about some of the miracles that happened to get me to this point.
So true. The part that struck me this read-through of the Doctrine and Covenants was how different a person Joseph was after Liberty Jail. I have times in my life that were like that – hard and long and intense – and I was a different person afterward. It is amazing how much really good, productive work happens to us as Nephi observed did with his father: “And all these things did my father see, and hear, and speak, as he dwelt in a tent.” Makes my times in a tent seem suddenly precious.
Thank you. This will be our FHE read.
Let me try that again. Thanks for finally feeding your blog monsters, I know I enjoyed the meal.
First – Wait, there’s a game for the dots???
Second – Don’t apologize for neglecting our neediness. Your blog. Write when you want to.
Third – I love D&C 122. And even as bad as it was for Joseph, no matter what happens to any of us, we need to remember that the Son of Man hath descended below us all. Are we greater than Him? We need to quit whining and learn from the moment.
Your thoughts are just what I needed today/this week. I’ve been struggling with a miscarriage and I think that it could be Heavenly Father setting up dominoes in my life. Thanks….
Ahh. I am sorry. We experienced that, and understand the struggle, and the pain. There is something tragic in the “what might have been”, but we need to try and figure out what the Lord wants us to do with it, or become because of it. My best to you.
You wrote this one just for me. My beloved went Home last Tuesday morning. Our first wedding anniversary was Monday. I have no doubt that he hung on that extra hour and a half, just for me. And I have a whole new appreciation for the “peace which passeth all understanding” and the lyrics of “Do What Is Right.” There are some huge dominoes ahead of me, but life has taught me that if I just keep moving, Heaven will nudge me in the right direction, and I will be where I need to be, when I need to be there.
What a beautiful soul you must be to have such perspective. Yes, Heaven will nudge, there will be storms and occasional clouds to obscure your vision, but if you can keep remembering this, wow. . .
I went and spent some time on your blog, and learned much about resilience, compassion and faith. I am so sorry for you loss, and appreciate your willingness to put yourself out there to bless our lives.
Thank you both. I had surprisingly productive day for my first one back at the office, a handful of tasks (rather than the whole list) that I want to work on now that I’m home, and time for knitting before I crash. Plus, one of my co-workers brought banana bread, and it was a most delicious way to eat my feelings, mid-morning.
P.S. I stopped off at Half Price Books to pick up more cards for thank-you notes, and a “no whining” sign jumped into my arms as I headed for the checkout counter.
thank you.
Lovely Sunday sermon. I missed church to stay home with a sick little one, so I’m glad you wrote this today. It occurs to me that your blog is an excellent file folder full of ideas for your next talk. You’ve got so many mostly-finished talks in here! Throw in a few general conference quotes and you’re good. I’d skip the one written by your hick alter-ego, though.
Thanks, MMM. A timely and inspired post.
I love the Domino analogy. And I’m grateful I can’t relate to being hit in the face with a manure-filled sock.
I teach gospel doctrine and was very impressed that often we’re on both sides of preparation. Our experiences are preparing us for what lies ahead and we’re helping those around us prepare for their future endeavors also.
Thank you for this. As you know recently many dominoes have fallen and maybe it is all for a reason. I hope so!
Amen. And Amen.
Well done. Thanks for buckling under pressure.
