Family Home Avenging

Last night I finally took the entire family to see The Avengers. For FHE. What? Yes, once in a while we go crazy on Monday night. It can’t all be profound teaching and testimonies.  It was also nice to go a week without singing Book of Mormon Stories, complete with hand actions.

The movie?  I enjoyed it. Ten seconds of Hulk vs. Loki was worth the price of admission. Add to that a soda and popcorn, and you can’t go wrong. My EC liked it too.

Loki?  Oh, I guess I should explain who Loki is. He is the Villain – the antagonist against whom our heroes must contend. He is evil in a cool, smarmy sort of way.  But he dresses in ridiculous outfits.  Several times during the movie he presents himself in his fancy clothes, complete with an outrageous headdress/helmet thing.

So I’m looking at this ridiculous helmet and I thought “Hey, I’ve seen that somewhere before.”  Then it occurred to me that Loki stole it.

Yes, Loki stole his “look” from Moroni. That is so wrong!  From that moment on, I sat watching The Avengers wondering what else they stole from the Book of Mormon. Then I started thinking that they should just make a “Book of Mormon Avengers”. It would be awesome.
There are plenty of characters to choose from:
First, you have Nephi – the original triple-threat.
Nephi had the Sword of Laban, and knew how to use it, he could use a bow and arrow like Hawkeye, and the coolest of all, he had the ability to stretch forth his hand and zap people so they would “wither like a reed”.  Like Iron Man, only better.  (more here)  And besides, look at those guns – he makes Thor look like a Demi-Wimp.
Then there is Ammon
MIld-mannered shepherd/killing machine. Ammon was so proficient with a sling that he could kill from a distance. But if the fighting got close, he could handle a sword. His signature move? Disarming his adversary. Literally. And again, look at the muscles on that guy!
Teancum:
Teancum’s weapon of choice and method of attack was at close-range, with a javelin. He was also really crafty. He was able to sneak into the camp of his enemy and kill the leader. Not once, but twice! (Granted, the second time he didn’t make a clean getaway and was killed. Oops!)
Samuel the Lamanite:
We know very little about Samuel, but we know that he had some sort of “force-field” that prevented arrows from striking him. That takes some faith!
Bad guys?  Take your pick – there’s a bunch of them: Kishkumen, Gadianton, Korihor, Coriantumr (Who was invincible) and of course the tag-team of Laman and Lemuel.
My intention when I started writing this was to give you all the scriptural references to back up the Book of Mormon Avengers, but then I thought – Hey! This would be a fun thing to do with the boys for FHE next week.  So, you’re on your own.  Besides, it would be good for us all to crack the book open and remind ourselves what real heroes are all about.

  1. Abish, had a vision of her father that she remembered in a time of need for her people, and her touch revived the Queen. That’s for the individual who wants a woman in the line up. I loved the Avengers, and compared them to Book of Mormon Heroes too. Personally, I loved Captain America, and the older gentleman standing up to Loki. When the rest of the people bowed in fear. It reminded me of President Monson’s talk on being willing to Stand alone, and trust God. My kids are a bit young for this movie, but someday we will watch this, together, and discuss the values we recognized.

  2. Seriously, you couldn’t think of one, ONE, female from the scriptures that you could stuff into the role of Black Widow? I mean, I get that women can be light on the ground in the scriptures, but you just had to pick one. I’m sorry that the movie doesn’t fit your white-male only view point, but if you’re going to do a comparison of The Avengers to BOM heros (and villians), it’s a SERIOUS oversight to eliminate the one female avenger. And honestly since you included Loki, the villian in your little piece of meta, it’s also pretty ugly that you didn’t include Nick Fury.

    1. You’re right, that wouldn’t make much of a headline, because no one would be surprised. They’d be all, yes and this is news how? Which is why I’m so disspointed in this post, way to keep the stereotype going there dude.

Further, Um… I CAN actually do multiple things at once. And those two minutes of my time I used to comment on this blog are hardly indicitive of my hobbies. I also don’t see it as a waste of my time to point out social injustices when I find them. Because I personally think that social injustices should be routed out and killed with fire.

    2. For starters, maybe because it wasn’t a post about spiritual female role models. It was about some of the Avengers. (Duh) If you would like to suggest a woman in the Book of Mormon who displayed superpowers, please submit you idea instead of nitpicking.

Since you are “Angry”, you would probably be more comfortable on blogs like Feminist Mormon Housewives.

Or, if you are serious in your quest for female spiritual role models, 1) BE ONE – but you would have to lose the “angry” part, and 2) read blogs like this: http://womeninthescriptures.blogspot.com/

  3. We did this! My kids CHEERED when I told them what our plans were. I am not giving you any of the credit either, I like being Super Mom for once 😉 (pssst, thank you!)

  4. Omgoodness! Love this!! U need to totally make a comic book or book or novel or whatever! This is awesome! My new favorite blog!

  5. My husband uses Star Wars references all the time when teaching the kids anything gospel related. I will have to show him this so that he can mix it up a bit. 🙂

  6. I’d totally go see that movie!

But only if Richard Dutcher had nothing to do with it…he’s kinda nuts..

Unless you are buds with him…then he’s totally awesome.

  7. You’re going to have to change your moniker to MMMM – Middle-age Mormon Moroni Man. Assuming that’s “you” pulling the handcart. 🙂 I do love being 1st again!

    1. I thought this was hilarious and kept calling for my husband to come see…..begrudgingly he finally came, and saw, but never cracked a smile. Will I never learn? I’ve been married to this guy for 52 years!!!!

  8. Giggled my way all though this post. The EC is looking at me like I’ve got a screw loose. But we are going tomorrow while my mom-in-law watches our little ones. Looking forward to it even more now!

    1. TOTALLY!!! Two of my favorite parts. That and “Dost thy mother know thou wearest her drapes?”

I am not an action movie lover at all. My teenage daughters saw the movie while on vacation with my parents. They assured me I would like the comedy while my husband would love the action. They were right! And some of the action was pretty hilarious too.

  9. We went to see Avengers on Friday and loved it! Our boys LOVE the avengers! We’re gonna have to share this with them for FHE, too! We’ve talked about the Avengers being fantasy before, and that the Book of Mormon has REAL life Heroes-they lived and taught people the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  10. Great post. I enjoyed the Avengers too, but unfortunately I became a little self conscious of my bicep size after watching the movie. I guess that’s ok since that also happens when I read the Book of Mormon and see all of those Arnold Friberg paintings.

  11. I hear you, Anon, but everyone is in need of salvation and we all fall short. Beam, mote, etc etc. I try not to worry about what everyone else in the “mormon world” is doing and just focus on me and my house. 🙂

  12. And then there is me who is so tired of every popular teen movie out being PG-13 and that I am supposed to be okay with taking the family to a PG-13 because everyone else in the mormon world is okay with a PG-13 rating. Everyone says Avengers is a great film – maybe a little violent, maybe a little language but they hear worse at school right? It frustrates –

    1. Who says you’re supposed to be okay with taking your family to a PG-13 movie because “everyone else in the mormon world is okay with a PG-13 rating”? You decide what’s right for you and your family… it doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing, including MMM.

    2. I don’t recall any bad language in that movie….but its been a few weeks since I’ve seen it.

    3. For this reason, we won’t be going as a family. But my older teens and young adults have all seen in and loved it. My tender 11-year old will just have to wait.

  13. Have you seen the “Tangled” family home evening lesson? I haven’t actually read all that much about it, but it seems to be using that movie that make a gospel point.

So this sounds like the equivalent of that, but more geared towards the boys.

Add your 2¢. (Be nice.)
