Groan. It is Christmas night. I have completely – and rightly – ignored my blog for days. Christmas Day is winding down, and I thought I would type up a few observations for you. (Well, not just for you, but also to keep me distracted and out of the kitchen.)
1) It was a lovely Sabbath day. I love it when Christmas falls on the Sabbath, and I wish it could happen every year. Our Sacrament meeting was wonderful, filled with great music and two great talks – short and appropriate. I loved seeing all the families made complete with kids returning home to the nest for the weekend.
2) Choirs are nice. But if I have my choice, I would rather sing as a congregation than listen to a choir – even in General Conference. (heresy!) The participation through music is a big part of my worship. The solution for me? Sing in the Ward Choir. Loved it today.
3) Ending the Christmas Eve festivities with sacred carols and a reading of Luke 2 brings it all together.
4) I’m glad my kids are getting old enough to pick our nice presents and pay for them with their own money. Especially the second part.
5) I’m also glad that as my kids get older, they get wiser. For example: Here is a shot of the cookie plate they left for Santa last night: Cookies, fudge and a can of late night survival.
6) The coldest, longest night of my life was one Christmas eve when I was stranded in Antarctica. Not really. My brother and I assembled a basketball standard for my kids in the middle of the night in my driveway. I couldn’t feel my fingers for weeks.
7) I enjoy Christmas Day and the week after Christmas much more than the week leading up to Christmas. It bothers my EC immensely, but I still see the Christmas “prep” as a chore that needs “done”.
8) Perhaps it’s the state of the nation or the economy, but it seems that things were a little more “bah-humbuggier” than usual in our area. far fewer houses were lit, we received fewer Christmas cards, and fewer treats. On second thought, maybe people are just getting tired of us – not Christmas.
9) Spiral-cut hams are not as good as uncut hams. It think the pre-slicing dries them out. I much prefer to slice it myself. Yes, I know it is my opinion, but if you could have tasted the ham I made today, you would have been impressed.
10) Does anyone find it odd that many of us eat ham on both Christmas and Easter? Is it a Christianity “cheap shot” at the Jews? I think we get the point. Besides, a kosher Christmas seems really weird.
11) I was happy to NOT watch the NBA at all today. It might take some time for me to ease back into that relationship.
12) That’s enough. Pumpkin roll and ham sandwiches are calling me.
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!

When I was in college, a married woman from Italy invited me over for Easter dinner. And we had lamb. I can still hear Maria Pia exclaiming…”You Americans! It’s LAMB of God, LAMB..not HAM of God!!” as she threw up her hands in disbelief!
Our Christmas was great! Our special dinner is always Christmas eve, where this year we had a delicious Latin dinner and Christmas day our tradition is frozen lasagna. My husband is the ward music director and choir director, so he was busy with that. The choir sang 2 short numbers and the primary sang 2 short songs, too. We had a beautiful piano solo and the congregation sang 4 songs. My husband gave the first talk and the bishop was the other speaker.
Jocelyn: Now I know where you got your brains. Tell your folks “thanks” .
As far as exaltation goes – that’s the plan. I figure that will be the only way I will get to meet you.
Merry Christmas and happy new year! My parents are here and during a convo they said “The MMM should be exalted, but that’s just my opinion.” I decided never to mention that to you, but just went back on that promise to myself. You’re welcome.
Happy Christmas and hi. I enjoyed your list.
I sang with the choir on Christmas Day and it was excellent. I am not so much a fan of singing as a fan of singing in a group where I can’t really hear myself. The sound all swells together until I feel part of something bigger and can pretend I can sing.
One small gripe though… Different people at every practice. Is that a Mormon thing? Haha
I totally agree with you about singing congregational hymns instead of the choir. But there apparently must be a choir, so I joined it.
I love it when Christmas is on Sunday too. It’s wonderful. Plus the 1 hour church isn’t bad either.
The highlight of my Christmas day was talking to my missionary serving in Mexico! That was the best present I received.
We had a veggie Christmas this year (been studying the WOW lately and don’t eat much meat anymore) have to say it was interesting and kind of nice not to have a huge turkey or ham leftover. Kind of liked it.
I agree with singing. I said to my dh that I wish that is all we did at Scrament yesterday. I would have loved it!
With ElRey sick I kinda got an idea what Christmas would be like as a single parent. I didn’t like it.
This morning I am hiding in my room because I can’t bare to see the after Christmas mess! Not ready for that chore yet….I am ready for ham, tho!
Love #11…my thoughts exactly.
In my area I’ve noticed more houses decking the halls, even if all they could do was a single strand of lights.
It sounds like your Christmas holiday was perfect, just like mine! Well, not exactly like mine…I’m sure we had lots more chaos and craziness than you. Even our hour of Sacrament Meeting was filled with my little guy (just a bit hyped up on sugar) who really only has one volume. Loud!
Merry Christmas!
