We Need to Get Us One of Those!

I guess I wasn’t paying attention to the latest happenings in Swiebodzin, Poland last November, but it turns out that they completed this gigantic statue of Jesus.
They had a big dedicatory celebration and people came from far and wide to to participate.
Apparently it is now the tallest statue of Jesus on Earth.  At 167 feet, it is even taller than the famous statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro, which measures a puny 125 feet.
(Como vergonhoso.)
Of course everyone knows that we have a pretty cool statue of Jesus ourselves. Ours is called the Christus, and you can see it in many of the LDS Visitors Centers.  Well, it isn’t exactly ours – it’s a copy of one sculpted in 1821 by a Danish guy named Bertel Thorvaldsen. But our copy has been on display at the Visitor’s Center in Salt Lake since 1965.
I imagine back in 1965 it seemed pretty big. I know it seemed gigantic when I went there as a tiny boy. But now, in comparison, it seems a little small. In fact, the new one in Poland is 10 times bigger!

(This is about the right proportion)
So, not to be outdone by the good Polish and Brazilian peoples,  I was thinking that maybe we should start a campaign to raise funds to build our own gigantic Jesus statue. And I know the perfect place to put it:
Doesn’t that look awesome?!  This would be about the right depiction. The statue is about half as tall as the temple.
To help make this dream a reality, please join with me in donating to the “Giant Jesus Statue” fund, listed on your offerings slip.
If for some inexplicable reason it doesn’t work out, don’t be too distraught. It seems almost futile to try and keep up anyway. Not to douse your enthusiasm for the project, but the Spring Buddha statue in China is 420 feet tall. (Not fair!)
– Almost 3 times the height of the tallest Jesus statue.
– And 40 times taller than the Christus.
Oh, well. As Confucius said, “The simple and the modest are near to virtue.”

Another idea:
I do like MIndi’s comment about putting the statue near Wendover so that it stands out more.  Here is a picture of what it would look like next to “Wendover Will”.  It truly is more imposing!

  1. Holy toledo this is funny! I especially loved the tithing slip. And Tom being a U fan, I think we need the statue more on U mountain. You know, so we can always look up and be ashamed of our smuggling beer into the game.

  2. I’ll donate to that! Only I think we need to put it somewhere else, the temple dwarfs it too much. I say we put it out in the Salt Flats so when people come back from Wendover all they see is this giant Jesus looming over them and they can feel appropriately guilty for the sins they just committed.

  3. That is pretty funny. I always wondered what the “other” category was for. I had no idea my funds could be put to such virtuous and praiseworthy use!
